Affton, Oakville, and Webster Groves are beautiful suburbs to the south of St. Louis. Affton and Webster Groves are inside interstate 270, and Oakville is just outside, giving all the communities quick access to one of the main commuter and interstate transportation routes in the area.
The American history of this beautiful area goes back to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Many of the early settlers had been granted vast tracts of land by the Spanish King before the Louisiana Purchase. One of these settlers was a Frenchman named Gregorie Sarpey; he owned about 6000 acres southwest of St. Louis. A Scotsman named Kenneth MacKenzie purchased half of Sarpey’s land to the east and eventually divided it and sold it in 40-acre lots. In the period of 1835 to 1870, there was a lot of political tension in Germany, and many Germans moved to this area. A large group of English settlers also settled here.
Educational, health, and social services provide approximately 25% of the employment in all three towns. Retail trade provides about 12 to 13% in Affton and Oakville, and 10.5% in Webster Groves. Manufacturing is about the same percentages as retail. In Webster Groves professional, scientific, management, administrative, and waste management services provide about 15% of employment. One of the largest employers in St. Louis is Anheuser-Busch one of the major beer brewers in the world. They provide tours and a sampling room and of course periodic displaying of the Budweiser Clydesdales.
